Books to Give or Keep, 2024

Silver Century regularly recommends books—fiction, nonfiction, memoirs—that reflect our mission by portraying aging positively or by offering insights from thought leaders in the field of aging. Here are some of our favorites for holiday giving or to save for the winter months ahead.

Mrs. Quinn’s Rise to Fame

By Olivia Ford—Pamela Dorman Books, 2024

A terrific read for fans of the Great British Baking Show or any kind-hearted foodie. What makes this coming-of-(older)age novel truly special is the journey of 77-year-old Jenny, a woman who defies aging stereotypes and overcomes her lack of worldliness when she secretly applies to be a contestant on the prime-time TV show Britain Bakes. Jenny discovers new passions, learns the importance of embracing new people and experiences and bakes her way into readers’ hearts. If the tender story and the mouthwatering descriptions of baked goods aren’t enough to entice you, all the recipes are included.

Unraveling: What I Learned about Life While Shearing Sheep, Dyeing Wool, and Making the World’s Ugliest Sweater

By Peggy Orenstein–Harper Paperbacks, 2024

What did you do in the pandemic? This author learned to knit a sweater—from shearing the sheep to the final product, which is, she admits, ugly. Orenstein shares the intricacies of fabric crafts, providing readers with a rich understanding of the history and significance of these age-old traditions. This story is more than a memoir; it shows us the creativity of women across time, expressing their art through craft. It’s a thoroughly delightful, enlightening read.

The Mostly True Story of Tanner and Louise

By Colleen Oakley—Berkeley, 2023

This heartwarming, funny tale tells the intergenerational story of Tanner Quimby, a 21-year-old college dropout, and 84-year-old Louise Wilt, recently incapacitated by a hip replacement and hiding a secret past. The two women form a friendship when Tanner’s parents hire Louise as her caretaker, a position neither woman is happy about. As they get to know each other, they learn they have more in common than they thought. As Louise’s past catches up with her, the pair tries to outrun law enforcement in an interstate adventure with surprising plot twists along the way.

Roctogenarians: Late in Life Debuts, Comebacks, and Triumphs

By Mo Rocca and Jonathan Greenberg—Simon and Schuster, 2024

Who doesn’t enjoy the whimsy of humorist Mo Rocca? Roctogenarians profiles a wide range of individuals, some famous and some not, challenging the notion that people’s accomplishments dwindle as they age. Many of those profiled in the book faced setbacks, health issues or career obstacles but overcame them through sheer determination and passion. Rocca shows us there is no set timeline for achievement—it is never too late to pursue our dreams.

Happy reading in 2025!
